For communities who live in Haiti’s mountainous areas, access to healthcare and related services is nonexistent. With the absence of health clinics and inadequacy of road systems carry the sick to the nearest hospital, community members use a makeshift stretcher to do the job. Since they have to carry the sick for hours, oftentimes they end up dying on their way to the hospital. Typically, even where there are clinics and hospitals, most sick people in Haiti tend to wait until their condition gets worse before deciding to go to the doctor’s. Sometimes, when they end up seeing a healthcare professional, it’s already too late.
After conducting research and reflections on health issues in those areas, community leaders and HHPN concluded to center their activities on preventive care through education campaigns. As for disease treatment, patients will receive quality care. If the case is beyond the competence of the health professionals, patients will be referred to a hospital in the nearest city.
Preventive Care
We understand that disease prevention is the best approach for people living in remote rural areas in Haiti. Preventive measures have been very effective at reducing maternal death rate, infant mortality rate. It also helps increase life expectancy in target communities. Conversely, disease prevention is less costly than disease treatment. Since there is scarcity of financial resources in these communities, our organization has focused its efforts on disease prevention, while providing healthcare to a lesser extent. The only way diseases can be prevented is through well-designed education plan implemented over a long period of time. The education received will help the beneficiary communities gain the awareness and skills needed to protect themselves and pass on the acquired knowledge on disease prevention, health literacy, healthy nutrition, and basic commodities.
Healthcare and disease treatment
Haiti Health Professional's Networks aims to assist low-income communities in the US and Haiti in their quest for access to heath care. In the US we prioritize Heal Fair while our main focus in Haiti is to provide its rural communities with access to basic health care through medical mission trips on a regular basis.
In both Haiti and the US, the primary focus of our organization is preventative healthcare education. We believe it is the best approach to improving community health is in a sustaible manner.
